Project: Full Bathroom PVC Panel Makeover  |  Room: Bathroom  |  Difficulty: Easy–Medium  |  Time: 4–6 hours  |  Panel: Carrara Marble Grey 2400×1000mm

Bathroom tiling is one of the most dreaded home renovation jobs — the mess, the grouting, the waiting for it all to dry. PVC shower panels give you the same fresh, clean bathroom finish in a fraction of the time, with zero grouting and none of the mess. You can transform a full bathroom in a single day.

This guide covers a complete bathroom makeover using Britwall's Carrara Marble Grey PVC Shower Panels — a sophisticated grey marble effect in a smooth matt finish. Waterproof, flameproof, and incredibly easy to install over existing tiles or bare walls.

About This Panel

The Carrara Marble Grey PVC Shower Panel measures 2400mm × 1000mm × 10mm and covers 2.4 m² per panel. The matt finish gives a sophisticated, non-reflective surface that doesn't show water marks or fingerprints — ideal for wet areas. Key features:

  • 100% waterproof — suitable for direct water contact
  • Flameproof — fire-resistant for safety compliance
  • No grout lines — seamless, easy-clean surface
  • Matt finish — hides water spots and marks
  • Direct fix — goes over existing tiles or bare plaster
  • 10mm thickness — rigid and durable, not flimsy

How Many Panels Do You Need?

Use this quick reference for common bathroom wall areas. We always recommend adding one extra panel for cuts and any waste:

Wall Area Panels Needed Panel Cost
Shower enclosure only (~3–4 m²) 2 panels £100
Small bathroom (~8 m²) 4 panels £200
Standard bathroom (~12 m²) 5 panels £250
Large bathroom (~16 m²) 7 panels £350

💡 Tip: Measure each wall individually (width × height) and add together. Subtract window and door openings. Add 10% for waste. Divide total m² by 2.4 to get the number of panels needed.

Step-by-Step Installation

1

Prepare the Surface

PVC shower panels can go directly over existing tiles (if they're firmly fixed and flat), bare plaster, or painted walls. Clean the surface with a degreaser and allow to dry fully. If going over tiles, check none are loose — press each one firmly. Any hollow-sounding tiles must be re-fixed first. Fill any holes or gaps with waterproof filler.

2

Measure and Plan Your Layout

Measure each wall and sketch a quick plan. Each panel is 1000mm wide, so work out how many full panels fit per wall and where cuts will fall. Aim to centre the pattern on the most visible wall (usually the wall you face when entering). This keeps any cut panels at the edges where they're less noticeable.

3

Cut Panels to Size

For straight cuts, score the panel face with a Stanley knife along a straight edge and snap — PVC cuts cleanly this way. For more complex cuts around fixtures, use a fine-tooth jigsaw. Always cut from the face side to avoid chipping the surface. For cuts around pipes and taps, use a hole cutter.

4

Start in a Corner

Begin at an internal corner. Apply adhesive in vertical zigzag lines on the back of the first panel — approximately every 200mm across the width. Press the panel firmly into the corner, check it's plumb with a spirit level, and hold for 30 seconds. This first panel is your reference point for the whole room.

5

Work Around the Room

Butt each new panel tightly against the previous one — the tongue-and-groove edge system creates a virtually invisible join. Work around the room panel by panel. Where panels meet at external corners (like around a bath or shower screen), use corner trim to cover the join cleanly. For internal corners, a thin bead of silicone is sufficient.

6

Seal Every Edge and Joint

This is the most important step for a waterproof result. Apply a continuous bead of waterproof silicone sealant along: the bottom edge where panels meet the floor/bath tray, around all fixtures (taps, shower head, pipe collars), and at any cut edges. Smooth each bead with a damp finger or silicone tool immediately. Allow 24 hours to cure before exposing to water.

7

Fit Any Trims

For a fully finished look, fit end cap trims at any exposed panel edges. At the top of the panels (if not going to the ceiling), a chrome or white trim bar gives a neat finish. At the base, a white or chrome angle trim covers the joint between panels and floor.

💡 Pro tip — Shower enclosures: In the shower, apply a second bead of silicone on top of the first once it has cured. This double-sealing gives you total peace of mind in the wettest area of the bathroom. For extra grip in the shower zone, also use mounting clips at the top and bottom in addition to adhesive.

Cleaning and Maintenance

One of the biggest advantages of PVC panels over tiles is how easy they are to keep clean. There are no grout lines to harbour mould or soap scum. Simply wipe down with a damp cloth or non-abrasive bathroom cleaner. The matt Carrara marble finish resists water marks and fingerprints much better than gloss surfaces.

Avoid abrasive scrubbing pads which can dull the surface over time. A soft microfibre cloth and a standard bathroom spray cleaner is all you'll ever need.

Why Choose PVC Over Tiles?

No grout = no mould. Grout is where bathroom mould grows. PVC panels eliminate grout lines entirely, making maintenance dramatically easier and keeping your bathroom looking fresh for years.

Goes over existing tiles. No need to rip out old tiles, which means no mess, no skip hire, and no replastering. This alone saves hundreds of pounds on a typical bathroom renovation.

Ready to use the same day. Tile adhesive and grout need 24–48 hours to cure. PVC panels are ready to use in as little as a few hours once the adhesive has grabbed — just let the silicone sealant cure overnight before using the shower.

Consistent finish. No grout colour variation, no lippage between tiles, no pattern alignment issues. Every bathroom looks clean, consistent, and intentional.
