Can You Use LVT with Underfloor Heating?

Yes - LVT is one of the best floor coverings for underfloor heating (UFH). Vinyl conducts heat efficiently, warms up quickly, and is comfortable to walk on at lower flow temperatures. It pairs especially well with modern low-temperature wet UFH systems and properly designed electric mats.

The Critical Number: Surface Temperature

Almost every LVT manufacturer specifies a maximum floor surface temperature of 27°C. This isn't the water flow temperature or the thermostat setting - it's the actual surface of the floor. Exceeding 27°C can warp planks, soften the click joint, and void your warranty. A floor sensor probe (not just a room thermostat) is the safe way to control this.

Wet vs Electric UFH: Which Works Best?

Wet (hydronic) systems are the natural partner for LVT in larger areas or whole-house installations. They distribute heat evenly across a screed at low flow temperatures. Electric mats work well in smaller rooms like en-suites and small kitchens but need careful zoning and almost always require a floor probe to prevent hot spots.

Heat-Up and Cool-Down Procedure

After installation, leave your UFH off for at least 48 hours. Then ramp it up gradually - increase the setpoint by 1-2°C per day until you reach your target. This prevents thermal shock to the planks. Do the same in reverse when shutting the system off in spring.

Subfloor and Underlay Considerations

Use a UFH-rated underlay with a very low thermal resistance (Tog value). Thick standard underlays act as an insulator and reduce heat transfer dramatically, making your UFH inefficient. Many premium LVT planks have a built-in IXPE backing rated for UFH - check the spec.

Acclimatising Before Installation

Bring boxes of LVT into the heated room 48 hours before laying. If the UFH is already in place, run it at a low constant temperature during acclimatisation, then turn it off completely during the install itself.

Common Mistakes

Setting the thermostat too high 'to warm up faster' - this overshoots the 27°C surface limit. Skipping the floor probe and relying on room temperature alone. Fitting LVT over a freshly poured screed that hasn't fully cured (allow at least 28 days plus a commissioning cycle). Using a thick fabric or felt underlay that blocks heat transfer.

Quick Checklist Before You Order

Confirm your LVT is rated for UFH. Confirm your UFH system has (or supports) a floor probe. Confirm the underlay/backing is UFH-compatible. Confirm your screed is fully cured. Confirm your room thermostat can be set to limit surface temperature.
