Slat Feature Wall — Living Room
If you've been scrolling interiors on Instagram wondering how people get those beautiful ribbed wood walls — this is it. Slat wall panels are one of the simplest and most impactful ways to transform a living room wall. No plastering, no mess, and you can finish in an afternoon.
In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to install Britwall 6-slat wall panels on a standard 4m × 2.5m living room wall, what products you need, how much it'll cost, and some tips to get a flawless result. These panels are moisture-proof, UV-stable, and termite-resistant — built to last without any maintenance.
What You'll Need
Here's the full shopping list for a 4m wide × 2.5m tall wall. Each slat panel is 2400mm × 250mm, giving you 0.6 m² of coverage per panel. For 10 m², you'll need 16 panels (we always recommend an extra panel for cuts and waste).
💡 Colour options: This guide uses Warm Walnut, but the same panels are available in Natural Oak, Grey Oak, and Black Wood — all at the same price. Pick the one that suits your room.
Step-by-Step Installation
Prepare Your Wall
Make sure the wall is clean, dry, and reasonably flat. Remove any loose wallpaper, flaking paint, or protruding nails. You don't need to strip the wall back to plaster — panels can go over painted surfaces, old wallpaper that's stuck down firmly, or even existing tiles. Use a damp cloth to wipe off any dust.
Mark Your Starting Point
Using a spirit level and pencil, draw a vertical plumb line at the left edge of the wall where your first panel will go. This is the most important step — if your first panel is straight, the rest will follow. Measure the wall width and work out how many full panels fit across. If there's a gap at the end, you'll cut the last panel to size.
Cut Panels to Height (if needed)
The panels are 2400mm (2.4m) tall. If your ceiling is 2.5m, you may need to trim 100mm off the top, or run the panels with a small gap at the top which can be hidden with coving. Use a fine-tooth saw for a clean edge. Always cut from the back to avoid chipping the visible face.
Apply Adhesive
Apply Britwall panel adhesive in vertical zigzag lines on the back of the panel — roughly 5 lines across the width. Don't be stingy with the adhesive; you want solid contact with the wall. For heavier panels or uneven walls, you can also add a few dabs of grab adhesive for extra hold.
Fix the First Panel
Press the first panel firmly against the wall, aligning it with your pencil line. Push from the centre outwards to remove air pockets. Hold for 30 seconds to let the adhesive grip. Check with the spirit level that it's perfectly vertical before moving on.
Slot Remaining Panels Together
Slide the next panel's tongue into the previous panel's groove. Push together firmly — you should feel the joint click into place. Apply adhesive to each panel before fixing. Work your way across the wall, panel by panel. A rubber mallet with a block of wood can help tap stubborn joints together without damaging the face.
Cut the Final Panel
Measure the remaining gap at the end of the wall. Transfer this measurement to the back of your last panel, add 2mm for a snug fit, and cut to size. Slot into place with adhesive.
Finish the Edges
Apply end cap trims to any exposed edges — typically the left and right ends of the wall. These just push-fit or stick into place for a clean, professional finish.
💡 Pro tip: Leave the panels in the room for 24–48 hours before installation to acclimatise to the room temperature. This prevents any expansion or contraction after fitting.
💡 Working with a helper makes a big difference. The panels are light but at 2.4m tall, it's much easier with a second pair of hands to hold them in place while the adhesive grabs.
Upgrade: Add LED Backlighting
Take this project to the next level by adding a warm white LED strip behind the panels. Mount a 5m COB LED strip along the top edge of the wall before fixing the panels — it creates a beautiful ambient halo glow that highlights the texture of the slats in the evening.
Add COB LED Strip — £18 →Why Slat Wall Panels?
Beyond looking fantastic, Britwall slat panels are built for the real world. They're moisture-proof — so they won't warp in humid rooms or near kitchens. UV-stable — meaning the colour won't fade even if your wall gets direct sunlight. And termite-resistant — unlike real timber, they won't attract pests or deteriorate over time.
They're also incredibly practical — they don't need painting, won't chip or scratch like plaster, and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. If a panel gets damaged, you can replace a single panel without redoing the whole wall.
